Academic Requirements:

The entry requirements for PGDE courses are based on the requirements set by the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). The minimum entry requirements we ask for, are as follows:

Degree requirements
An ordinary degree, or international equivalent.

Degree must include:

80 SCQF credits with 40 credits at SCQF level 8 from at least two of the following subjects:
consumer studies
food studies
food or textile technology
nutrition
the other 40 SCQF credits must be from the above, or any areas outlined below:
family studies (parenting; childhood studies; family lifestyles; socioeconomic influences; environmental issues)
food sciences (food chemistry; composition of foods, processing and manufacturing of foodstuffs; functional properties of foods; biotechnology; microbiology)
health (health promotion; health education; determinants of health, lifestyles and health; environmental issues; health and food policies)
hospitality (practical food preparation skills; food preparation techniques)
textile studies (textile construction; properties; finishes; contemporary developments; production systems; textile futures; design technologies)
Evidence of certified competency in textiles, practical food or nutrition is required if this is not included in the degree. Use the ‘contact’ tab on this page to get in touch.

Maths & English
Higher (SCQF Level 6) English Grade C or above
National 5 (SCQF Level 5) Mathematics Grade C or above

Experience & References
evidence that you have experience of working with children in a secondary school or related setting
an understanding of modern secondary education
an ability to relate to people
Relevant experience should be noted in your personal statement.

At present, it's difficult for all potential student teachers to access schools to gain experience in support of their application for programmes of Initial Teacher Education. Where possible, opportunities should be sought to gain experience in contexts which involve working with children and/or young people.

References

Applications made via UCAS require one reference and those made via the University direct system require two. This should be an academic reference if you are a current student or recent graduate (ie within the last 5 years). A professional reference (current/recent employer who can testify to your suitability to teach) is acceptable if you graduated more than 5 years ago. This can also relate to any voluntary experience you have working with children/young people.

A reference must be included with your UCAS application; only in very exceptional circumstances will we consider an application without one and you must explain in your personal statement why this has been omitted. The reference should be provided as soon as possible as no offer can be made until the reference has been received. References from family or friends are not acceptable.

English language requirements
You're required to have a suitable minimum level of competency in the English language if your first language is not English or if you haven't been educated wholly or mainly in the medium of English.

For postgraduate studies, the University of Strathclyde requires a minimum overall score of IELTS 6.5 (no individual test score below 5.5) or equivalent. Tests are valid for two years.

Pre-sessional courses in English are available.

Form outside UK Students:

Academic Requirements:

Graduates from public universities and Tier 1 private universities with a 60% (3.0/4 GPA) will be considered for entry. Students of other private universities will be considered on a case by case basis.

Academic Requirements:

For entry to Strathclyde postgraduate programmes, we'd look for a first-class undergraduate degree (approx 60%) from a recognised Indian institution. Although 60% is a general entry requirement we understand that the marking system in some states and national universities make it harder to achieve 60%, therefore we will accept 55% from University of Mumbai, University of Calcutta, University of Delhi etc. Graduates from the IITs and IIMs will also be considered with marks in the region of 55%. If you wish to apply for a research degree you'd normally have to have a Masters degree and some experience of research work.

Academic Requirements:

Diplomë universitare is insufficient for entry. Kandidat i Shkencave (Candidate of Sciences), Masters level will be considered. A score of 8.5-9.5 from a well ranked public institution is considered comparable to a UK 2.1 while a score of 8-8.5 is considered comparable to a UK 2.2.
