Canterbury Christ Church University has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1962 as a teacher training college. Initially responding to a national shortage of Church of England school teachers, the college began with 75 students and nine teachers, led by Dr. Frederic Mason. In 1964, the institution moved to its purpose-built North Holmes Road site.

A significant moment occurred in 1965 when HRH Queen Elizabeth II visited the Canterbury Campus on Maundy Thursday. This event marked a royal recognition of the university's presence and contribution.

The 1970s saw further developments, with the introduction of the first degree program, the Bachelor of Education. Dr. Michael Berry, who was appointed as Principal in 1975, played a key role in the university's growth until his retirement in 1997. In 1976, the university expanded beyond teacher training, launching its first non-teacher training degrees, including a BA in English with Religious Studies, an MSc in Physics and Education, and a Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

Over the years, the university continued to evolve, celebrating its Diamond Jubilee in 2022, marking 60 years of positive contributions to education, research, and innovation.

Canterbury Christ Church University, with a history rooted in impactful education, research, and engagement, has made significant contributions to diverse fields. Their arts-based interventions have positively impacted over 30,000 patients across the UK, improving health outcomes for those with respiratory, neurological, and mental health conditions, earning recognition in national clinical guidelines.

The university's research on Justice Support Dogs has led to enhanced evidence quality for crime victims, resulting in more secure convictions and their commissioned use in criminal justice systems across the UK, Canada, and the entire United States. On the education front, the National Institute for Christian Education Research has underpinned a curriculum framework for the inspection of all 4700 Church of England schools in England and Wales. Additionally, the university's efforts in unearthing the silenced voices of the Spanish Civil War have empowered 68 communities to challenge state-sponsored narratives and reclaim the memories of the 144,000 'disappeared' victims of oppression.
